Gender profile for Fermilab employees In 2015, 19.9% of engineering bachelors degrees were awarded to women* So should we focus on recruitment or retention? RECRUITMENT RETENTION SWE outreach program coming soon to visit university chapters with the goal of increasing our hiring pool. Is this a problem? Possibly, based on a recent Fermilab survey* Next focus: can Fermilab do anything to improve retention rates? fSWE group to foster a sense of community among women engineers already here What else can we do? Look to data that’s out there. 5 local university visits per year for groups of 30-50 students to get the attention of quality graduates Visit package nearly complete with slides, visuals, handouts, contacts, etc. First visit May 2 at UIUC Volunteers for other visits? New fSWE group is a link to SWE chapters at universities *Barzi, E., A Personal Take on Enhancing Diversity and Inclusion at Fermilab, TD-16015. 2016. 2/14/2017 Nobrega EAC Diversity and Outreach Working Group - Update 5

Retention Studies Why do women leave engineering jobs? Most leave because of workplace climate or lack of advancement opportunities. Typical recommendations for organizations*: Create clear and transparent paths toward advancement Invest in training and professional development Communicate clear work goals and relevance of tasks to the big picture Create an organizational culture that values employees’ contributions Root out uncivil and undermining behaviors; create a respectful culture Create support networks of colleagues, supervisors, mentors Offer work-life initiatives that are embedded in family supportive cultures *Fouad, N.A., and Singh, R., Stemming the Tide: Why Women Leave Engineering, Women in Engineering 2011 Report, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, 2011 6 Nobrega EAC Diversity and Outreach Working Group - Update 2/14/2017
