Behavioural Safety Use Of Work Equipment

Why is Use of Work Equipment Important? Machines set or guarded incorrectly are Dangerous Ensures consistent knowledge about a equipment operation It is a legal requirement under the PUWER regulations (Provision and Use of Workplace Equipment Regulations) CE Marking – Ensures machine built to same set of standards Standard of Guarding Function of Emergency Stops Control of Machines Mechanical design – sharp edges etc Modifications to equipment can be very dangerous We have an obligation to protect employees, contractors and visitors

What must we do? All new installations must be CE certified and risk assessed CE ensures the build standard including machinery risk assessment Carry out task based Risk Assessments to make sure we are using it correctly Dangers arise if we do not control modifications or changes to equipment Repairs to guards are not to the original designs Process changes often present dangers not immediately evident Guards removed can reveal hidden dangers Guard modified can often create greater hazards How do we manage change? Complete the change documentation for all changes, no matter how small Review the current risk assessment to see if it covers the change Carry out a new risk assessment and add it to the existing one

How do we manage Work Equipment? People will still have accidents no matter how many controls are put into place Guards cannot be perfect all the time Equipment gets changed over time But there are some simple controls that can be put into place to minimise the risk of us getting hurt, these are:-

1. Machinery Guarding You must never defeat any machine or equipment guard Climb or reach over a guard Prise open a guard Remove any fixing screws in a guard Remove any part of the interlock system Enter a guarded zone and close the door behind you Remove a fixed guard unless the machine in safely isolated Operate the machine with any guard missing Operate the machine if any guard is broken and could allow access to moving parts At times it may be necessary to work behind a guard You MUST use a working behind guard permit You MUST be trained and authorised to use such a permit

2. Portable Tools Emploers must ensure that all hand tools are appropriately maintained and safe to use. Never bring in equipment from home to use at work. Always use the correct tools for the work being undertaken – never use a chisel as a screwdriver Always ensure that you have been appropriately trained to use the equipment – if not STOP Inspect all equipment before it is used – NEVER use defective equipment Make sure the equipment is PAT tested or “in date” before it is used If you are in a flammable area make sure the equipment is EX rated and suitable for use in a flammable area

3. You must ALWAYS Visually check the condition of equipment before use Check testing dates, ensure equipment is “in date” Make sure the equipment operates correctly Check to make sure the guards are secure and operate correctly Report any defects or concerns Line leader Area Team Leaders Maintenance Team Leaders PSL and SHE Leader
