Recording Progress for children with learning differences Tapestry Webinar 19th May 2021

Children with learning differences are just as entitled to child-centred assessment as any other child.

Statutory Framework for the Early years Foundation Stage Reasonable adjustments to the assessment process for children with SEND must be made as appropriate. Providers should consider whether they may need to seek specialist assistance to help with this. Children will have differing levels of knowledge, skills and abilities across the Profile and it is important that there is a full assessment of all areas of their development, to inform plans for future activities and to identify any additional support needs.

The Cherry Garden framework on Tapestry was designed to be used to support practitioner understanding and assessment for children with learning differences. They are not intended to be used to produce ‘data’ so fit very well

The framework is based on 6 main ‘Branch Maps’. These documents can be printed and used to support practitioners to better understand a child’s learning level. They are intended to be used flexibly and have no expectation of linear progress

Children’s learning is ‘explorable’ in the interactive cherry orchard that runs alongside the framework. Staff/parents/children can click on leaves on trees and petals on flowers to see their significant moments of learning.

As with any other child in your group, the most important thing is that adults working with a child have a good understanding of a child’s learning level and the progress that they have made, in order to identify concerns. The Cherry Garden framework can give you a helping hand with your monitoring of children with learning differences.

Take away points for reflection: Moving to a system of child-centred monitoring for all children How much do you feel is enough for your children? “Assessment is about individual children and their learning, not rows and rows of data.” – Dr Julian Grenier, Working with the revised Early Years Foundation Stage: Principles into Practice Email:
