1 Asking Questions Good readers ask questions when they don’t understand something. What question could you ask when you read: 1. That police came to Alex Rider’s house at 3 in the morning? 2. That Ian Rider’s office is always locked? 3. That the police said Ian Rider had not been wearing a seat belt, even though Alex knows he always wears a seat belt? 4. Alex sees that the people from the bank are carrying guns? 4 Finding Evidence Give 2 pieces of evidence from your book that support each of the following statements: 1. Alex feels like something is not right about the story he is being told about Ian Rider’s death. 2. Alex is worried about what will happen to him now that his uncle has died. 3. Are these people really employed by a bank or do they have a different kind of job? 4 1. 2. 3. 7 Finding Evidence Alex knows his uncle always wore seat belts; Alex mentions this to Jack and Mr. Crawley; Alex realises all of the things in his uncle’s study have been taken; Alex keeps thinking about all of these things when he goes back to school. Alex asks both Jack and Mr. Crawley what will happen to him; he prefers not to think about what will happen, because his future seems uncertain. Ian Rider’s study has been cleaned out; the ‘bank employees’ were carrying guns; Ian Rider’s car was shot & it hadn’t been in an accident as Alex was told; the ‘bank’ scans Alex for weapons when he visits; the ‘bank’ offices have few people; Ian Rider’s office has case files about poisons, etc in it. Summarising – Chapter 2 Alex goes back to school, but can’t concentrate because of all of the strange events surrounding his uncle’s death. He decides to find his uncle’s car, to see if the accident really happened. He finds a breaker’s yard with the same name as the van outside his house, so he goes there. At the yard, Alex finds his uncle’s car. It was not in an accident, but it has been shot – so Ian Rider was murdered. Alex sees one of the men from the ‘bank’ at the yard, and hides in his uncle’s car. While he’s hiding there, the car is picked up and crushed by the car crushing machine. Alex only just manages to escape in time. He is seen by the man from the bank, but is able to use his karate skills to escape from him as well. 2 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5 Setting and Characters The first setting is Alex Rider’s house and the second setting is the cemetery at Ian Rider’s funeral. Ian Rider, Alex’s uncle, is killed. You meet Mr. Blunt, from the bank. The strange thing that happens at Alex’s house is that Ian Rider’s study has been opened and entirely cleaned out while they were gone. Success Answer This – Criteria Chapter 3 Chapter 3 is set at Royal & General, the ‘bank’ where Ian Rider worked. Alex finds it strange because there are very few people there & the building is ‘blank’ – it doesn’t look like a bank. Alex has questions about his uncle’s death; he has realised he didn’t know his uncle well & wants to find out more. Mr. Crawley has been told to leave Alex with opportunity to get into the office on his own – it is a test to see if Alex can be a spy. Alex climbs out the window in Mr. Crawley’s office and goes in the window of this uncle’s office via a flag pole. Alex learns that his uncle did not work for a bank. Alex is knocked out. Why did they knock Alex out? Sayle says he wants to make an unforgettable gesture to express his true feelings towards the UK. Mr. Blunt and Mrs. Jones tell Alex he will have to go to an unpleasant institution to live, as Jack will have to return to the US. Alex is on a long hike. Alex is called Double 0 Nothing as a play on 007, but he’s a ‘nothing’ of a person. Wolf pushes him into a trip wire and Alex sets off a booby trap. Alex pickpockets matches from the sergeant and gives them to the rest of the Unit so they can start a fire. Keeping Track of the Setting 1. The chapter returns to the hike on page 73: ‘Alex remembered the words now, exactly 24 hours later.’ 2. Alex is called Double 0 Nothing by the Unit; is tripped by Wolf in the canteen; is pushed into a trip wire by Wolf in Killing House; learned map reading, radio communication, first aid; took an unarmed combat class; did an assault course; trained on his own when others were on a jungle survival course. 3. The sergeant punished Wolf because he had seen what Wold had done to Alex. 2 Setting and Characters 1. Chapter 4 is set at an M16 training centre. 2. M16 wants Alex to be a spy for them, to find out what Herod Sayle is doing. 3. Alex meets Mrs. Jones. 4. Alex doesn’t trust or like either of them; blames them for his uncle’s death. Evidence: tells them it’s their fault Ian Rider is dead; doesn’t think Mrs. Jones sounds sorry about Rider; feels blackmailed by them; Alex imagines the ‘human’ part of Blunt being flushed away when Alex says ‘no’ to being a spy. 5 Alex Rider Stormbreaker ‘So What Do You Say?’, Double 0 Nothing, Toys Aren’t Us (Chapters 4-6) 3 Alex Rider: 6 1. 2. 3. 4. 8 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Success Criteria Answer This – Chapter 6 The chapter is called ‘Toys Aren’t Us’ because Alex receives gadgets to help him at Sayle Enterprises. Gadgets are: yoyo w/ strong string; Zit-clean tube w/ cream that eats through metal; Game Boy w/ 4 games – Nemesis (fax/photocopier), Exocet (x-ray device), Speed Wars (bug finder) and Bomber Boy (smoke bomb). Various Alex pushes Wolf out when Wolf is afraid to jump. Alex is kind to Wolf and willing to help him, even though Wolf has been unkind to him. Alex cares about other people and doesn’t want them to do badly; he doesn’t hold grudges. This is similar to him giving the men matches from the Sargeant, and not telling what Wolf did in the Killing House. Alex needs to be able to pretend convincingly to be Felix Lester, so needs to know about him. Teacher Copy – with Answers Understanding Characters 9 Parents died when young; raised by uncle and Jack Uncle dies when he is 14; Alex notices discrepancies in stories (seat belt, bank officers having guns, etc) – Alex is curious and resourceful he goes to breaker’s yard to check car (and gets away from car being crushed and ‘bank’ employee), goes out an upper story window to get into uncle’s office. Smart – able to quickly get algebra answer Knows karate, in good shape (able to complete M16 training) Not accepted by K Unit because of his age; doesn’t tell on others, accepts others’ bad behaviour, but helps them anyway (Wolf – Killing House, matches, airplane) Finding Evidence The sergeant complained about having a boy in his unit; Unit calls him ‘Double 0 Nothing’; Wolf taunted/humiliated him whenever he could, others ignored him; Wolf tripped him at a meal; Wolf pushed him into a trip wire at the Killing House. Sergeant encouraged Alex to finish the hike/told him he knew about Killing House; Warm in the voice of Snake when he finished the hike; Wolf apologises to Alex when Alex leaves the Unit. Mr. Blunt expects Alex to be killed, says Alex dying would be proof Sayle was bad, says Alex dying might be helpful; doesn’t think Alex has a chance by sends him anyway. Mrs. Jones has planned for Alex to get gadgets to help; she challenges Mr. Blunt about Alex’s readiness to be a spy, says ‘we can’t do it’; stops him from parachuting – says it’s too risky; tells Alex about Yassen & says to let her know if he sees Yassen so she can pull Alex out of the situation. Mr. Sayle mentions the security man who left. 4 Answer This – Chapter 7 2 Visualising 3 Understanding Characters Visualising scenes and settings is an important strategy, particularly in action novels or thrillers. Herod Sayle is one the most important characters in Stormbreaker. 1. Re-read p 93-95. This is a description of Herod Sayle’s complex in Cornwall, as well as the security protecting it. 2. When guards open the door and go through, Alex is hiding under a table near the door, and manages to get his hand through the door to stop it from closing. Mr. Grin captures Alex. There might be security cameras that Alex is not aware of that have seen him. He makes it through the mine, including swimming through an underwater tunnel, because his uncle has been there before and opened passages and left a dry suit. When important events are revealed, we can make connections back to earlier events and they often begin to make sense. Nadia Vole is an important character in this story. She plays a particularly important role at the end of the book. Using what you now know, explain each of these earlier events or words: 1. 1 Asking Questions 2 Making Connections 1. What are they going to do to Alex? Will it involve the jellyfish? How can he escape? 2. Why does Sayle hate English school boys so much? What did they do to him? 3. Who was this bully? Is it the Prime Minister (we know Sayle and the PM were at school together)? Is this why he wants to release the dangerous virus? 4. Who are these friends? Why do they want to hurt the English? Will we learn who these friends are? 1. Nadia and Mr. Grin knew where Alex was because there are security cameras all over the estate. 2. Everyone interprets this ‘gesture’ as a kind one, but in reality, Sayle is trying to kill all of the school children because he hates the English. 3. Because the silver boxes contained a deadly virus, it was incredibly dangerous for it to be dropped – if the box had broken open, everyone there could have been killed. Yassen killed the man to emphasise to everyone else how careful they had to be. 4 Answer This – Chapter 13 & 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. When the PM turns the computers on across the country, they will release a small pox virus that will kill everyone in the schools. Sayle wants the PM to do this, as the PM bullied Sayle when they were at school together. Sayle threatens Alex with torture by Mr. Grin. Vole pretends to help Alex escape but actually leads him to a trapdoor that lands him in the jellyfish aquarium. Alex uses the zit cream lotion, that eats away the metal rivets holding the aquarium together, so the aquarium comes apart. People monitoring security cameras see Alex. It is almost 11 o’clock. Alex has 1 hour. 14 7 Answer This – Chapters 16 & 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 17 Alex would have to be next to Mr. Grin to use the radio and he remembers how fast Mr. Grin was with the knife and thinks it would be too dangerous. Mr. Grin turns the plane around and heads towards Alex. Alex left the Gameboy with the smoke machine cartridge on the plane. He activates it when the plane chases him. Everyone thinks Sayle is giving credit for schools receiving free computers to the Prime Minister. Sayle really means that all of the UK’s school children will die because the PM was a bully as a school child. Alex parachutes into the museum and shoots the button that will activate the computers. Sayle picks Alex up by pretending to be a taxi driver. She tells him she was working with his uncle & has an excuse for not stopping Gregorovitch; Alex is suspicious but has to trust her Vole gloats when Alex is in the tank; tells him how long others have lasted, how he’ll die (jellyfish or exhaustion), tells him how painful it will be Vole stays to watch Alex’s ordeal Vole tries to call someone when Alex uses his cream on the metal of the aquarium Vole is killed when the aquarium breaks and the jellyfish lands on top of her 6 Summarising – Chapter 15 Alex left the house and headed to the air stip to catch the cargo plane so he could get to London before Sayle released the viruses in the Stormbreaker computers. Alex used a harpoon he’d taken from Sayle’s aquarium room to knock out a guard and take his gun and Jeep. While being shot at by other guards, Alex manages to get onto the taxiing plane by shooting the harpoon gun, with the yoyo wire attached, into the plane and having the wire winch him up to the plane.
