PMI New Brunswick Chapter Strategy Update 6 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

Chapter leadership has recognized that a long term view of the organization is required if we are to retain and grow our membership Our value proposition is unclear, in part because the world of project management is maturing and changing; people choose to interact in different ways (more digital less in person); we struggle to articulate value in terms meaningful to members Companies are increasingly recognizing the value of strong project management skills, a positive trend that is having an impact on our service delivery model as organizations internalize core offerings that we provide (study groups, mentorships, education) To attract /retain members we need to be agile and responsive in our services to align to the needs of a maturing profession, our marketplace and PMI Global The current Executive has determined that the Chapter’s focus will remain on the three major centers – Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John Level of membership in the chapter is not reflective of the number of PMI members or practicing PM professionals in the province – we are not reaching or retaining the number of project professionals that we could be 7 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

Long term view - continued Membership renewals are inconsistent – we have a significant turnover year over year, with net new members joining but current ones not renewing. This would indicate that ongoing value of membership is not perceived, and/or people are joining to achieve a specific outcome (certification rebate for ex.) PMs are increasingly broadening their influence in organizations, moving out of traditional engineering, IT and operational projects to broader business change and transformation, driving a different set of educational and development needs (soft skills over hard technical) PMI Global has revamped the PDU categorizations and requirements – we need to reflect these in our educational and development offerings The market is changing, new delivery methods reduce or eliminate the cost of exam prep courses, training and development offerings are increasingly available online through webinars/webcasts – the digital experience is replacing traditional operating models We need members (current and future) to see PMI NB as a vibrant, relevant organization offering services that are reflective of their evolving needs, are cost effective and delivered with a consistent level of quality, and /or we need to offer something no one else is offering – differentiate our capability 8 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

The strategic direction of PMI NB is to be the group of choice for project professionals in NB, offering valued services Strategically, we will look at revamping, renewing or refreshing an offering that isn’t performing well, before we look to retire it – but agreed nothing is sacred We will measure value by participation and uptake from our members, actively soliciting feedback and responding with agility to adapt to better serve them We will monitor participation across study groups and look at how we deliver, how often and materials/delivery quality, but will not rely on these groups as our primary income generator Professional Development days will become our Flagship event Network events, with or without speakers are top of mind for our membership – more of these informal events will be scheduled. These may be lunch time, evening or special event driven 9 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

Strategic direction - continued Lunch & Learns vary in popularity from city to city, we need to think about the number, time of day and format of these in each location, and the fees We will look closely at the current governance structure to simplify it, including the size and composition of the board, tenure of positions, roles & accountabilities We are looking first at partnering to promote and provide access to, professional education rather than trying to deliver it ourselves or fund it’s delivery We will revisit our sponsorship model and determine how/if it needs to evolve to further support new initiatives like PD days and other events that may be launched in future We are looking for more informal means of connecting our members with each other and the executive. Mentoring platforms, support groups and online forums available via our web platform will be explored to enable connection without prohibitive costs 10 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

Finalizing the strategy will require a project driven phased approach: Chapter Strategy Phase One Finalize the strategy for the renewed PMI NB and create the implementation plan Confirm the vision and identify the requirements/ priorities of the membership, Board & Executive Confirm the scope of change we are willing to take on year over year Define the updated vision, mission and objectives of PMI NB Communication to membership Develop strategy/ plan for the Chapter and align with ongoing work to renew Charter, by-laws and policies Determine priority of activities Cascade strategic directives to Board committees and develop action plan Enabling the new model Phase Two Implementation Execute the strategic work plan through the development of Committee operational plans for 2016 Embed strategic objectives in our membership attraction efforts, sponsorship and all advertising Confirm Charter, by-law and policy changes via membership review process Publish the strategy to all members, PMI Global Phase Three Rollout and Move Forward Introduce new offerings, capabilities and/or events for our members Communicate the retirement of current activities that won’t carry on Publish the new Charter, by-laws and other governance documents to the members (website) for their information Revamp the Board, Executive and any other governing activity that needs to change to support the new direction Advertise our new capabilities, offerings, etc to corporate partners, sponsors Deliver Marc-André provided the Strategy update, noting that the plan was too long to cover in detail, however, the document would be installed on the website for member review. He invited members to review and share comments and ideas). This Strategy document can be found at http://pminb.ca/downloads.php 11 PMI NB Executive Strategy DRAFT Confidential

Service Delivery Review In the 2015 / 2016 year, Service Delivery worked with 36 volunteers: 4 LEC Directors. (PEI came on-line this year joining as the PEI LEC Director.) with David Boyce 5 Local Event Committee volunteers 3 Study Group Directors 24 Study Group SMEs Don asked about whether PEI was a conflict to our focus on the Fredericton, Moncton, Saint John area. Reg, VP Service Delivery, explained that this initiative does not draw from our focus as there are PMI-NB members in PEI, as well as an interest in the Lunch & Learn activities and someone interested in leading the efforts to coordinate the offerings. Warren Long inquired about what Lunch and Learn topics people are showing interest in. Reg noted that topics selected are the result of survey data collected at the end of Lunch & Learns and if people identify topics, we will attempt to put them on, but we rely on the availability of volunteers. PMI New Brunswick Budget 2016: The question of why the drop in expected revenue from the 2015/16 budget to the 2016/17 budget was raised. It was explained that the budget was drafted in the Fall of 2015 when only 2 Study Groups were up and running. Expectations were maintained at this level of participation. As well, Admin costs have been reduced by keeping Admin hours at parttime. AGM AGMMay May31, 13,2016 2015 Page 15
