COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation (CSG) EECS 826 SAR Investigation By: Kyle Turner [1]

Background and Motivation COSMO – SkyMed First Generation Funded by the Italian Ministry of Defense (MoD), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Scientific Research to provide Dual-Use for both civilian and defense Developed by Thales Alenia Space, Italy The goal is to service the global scientific community with data for use in Monitoring environments Risk management Natural resources management Defense and intelligence [1] 4 identical satellites flying a sun synchronous orbit Began deployment in 2007 and became fully operational in 2010 [2]

The CSG Mission Continuation of COSMO-SkyMed Developed again by Thales Alenia Space [4] 2 satellites so far? System requirements: Needs to handle large amounts of daily images Multi-resolution Multi-polarization [3]

[1] Satellites [5] All 6 currently in orbit 2nd Gen satellites possess enhanced antenna design. They can be electrically beam steered in elevation and azimuth and are multipolar receive.

Modes and Improvements [4]

Hofsjökull [5]

Non-standard Operation Modes Theatre Always non-zero doppler CSG satellite allows movement around pitch axis (orthogonal to the direction of motion) Collection of multiple images possible from single area Discrete Stepped Strip MultiSwath (DI2S-MS) Doubled PRF Can be partially or totally overlapped Can be used to improve image quality [6]
