Week 4 IT9 Compound Words

Week 4 IT9 Compound words This teacher led activity aims to introduce children to the idea that in English, new words can be made by putting two words together. Compound words are used, with each part of the word being illustrated with a picture, e.g. ‘sun’ and ‘hat’ together making a third meaning of ‘sunhat’ The child’s task is to decide which compound word is formed from the 2 pictures they are shown and to write the compound word. The next 2 slides are an answer sheet for each child to go along with the IT presentation, and should be printed off and distributed to the children before you start. After each slide is shown the children first write their answer, prompted by a question mark, and then discuss and receive feedback. As homework, the children draw a picture in the space available to show they have understood the compound words they have made.
