Clean & Green Origins “Needs” Eric Troxel, Assistant Director, RUSD Maintenance and Operations Jaime Ochoa, Dropout Prevention Specialist, RUSD Dr. Tad Hove, California Baptist University Professor and Riverside Community Member Our students NEEDED us to provide a solution to what they needed.

The Program 2016, 2017, 2018 (2nd Semester) Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 pm Early release day Food provided for students since they are coming from school - most are F/R lunch Central location (close for students) - RUSD’s Maintenance & Operations/Educational Options Center Sessions taught by volunteers from M&O 2019 (2nd Semester) Wednesday from 3:00-5:30 pm Food - 3:00-3:30; Lessons 3:30-5:30 More time in focused lessons Expand from 13 weeks to 18 weeks of lessons, and one week of practicedinternship Sessions continue to be taught by volunteers/M&O workers

The Program 18 weeks Orientation 5 weeks Custodial / 5 weeks Greenscape / 5 weeks Soft Skills 1 week of practice - Internship at the district’s annual CTE Showcase Graduation Graduation Community-based - community business partners “interview” students Graduation ceremony - community invited (including City, County and State government representatives)

Recruitment Identifying the students Reach out to counselors, Assistant Principals of Guidance, teachers, special education personnel (other district personnel as necessary to recruit) Screen group to determine the MOST at-risk students Select a diverse group: Students from our five comprehensive HS / two continuation/alternative education sites / local charters - try to bring in 30-40 students Look to help - Special Ed, Foster/Homeless, Probation, and nontraditional students Contract for “hiring” Recruitment - Fall 2018

What do our students look like? In an at-risk classroom, these are our students: Bullied Abused Single Parent Social Anxiety Socio-economic Drug use Formal or Informal Probation Foster / Group Home / Homeless Mental Health Parent Incarcerated

The Content Orientation: Program Overview, Course Expectations, including Absence Policy, Sign contract Custodial: Introduction to Custodial Services Team Cleaning Classroom and Restroom Care (with Certifications) Floor Care (with Certifications) Greenscape: Plants, Materials and Turf Management Soil Structure Integrated Pest Management (IPM) (with Certifications)

The Content Soft Skills: Conflict and Resolution Resumes, Cover Letters and Interview Techniques Harassment, Discrimination, and being on the “Hot Seat” Refining the Interview Public Speaking/Cultural Awareness Graduation Preparing for the Interview - dressing for success Interview Rotations Interview Feedback - employers/C&G staff Celebrate!

Soft Skills Summary Communication and Cognitive Framing - “It’s a YOU Thing” Customer Service Skills Resume and Cover Letter EdJoin - Overview, Login, and specific application instructions Mock Interview - Top 10 most asked questions, strategic planning about how to answer each question. Plenty of in-class practice.

District Support Why support if its not CTE? CTE gives students the opportunity to find out what they want to do, or where they want to go after HS What about students who haven’t figured it out yet? Who have we left behind? We support ALL students Because of the success of Clean & Green, we needed to create other programs that were “outside the box” GRID Alternatives Solar Futures Program STEM LEAPS - Police, Fire, Public Utilities

Conclusion The program is successful because of the participation of the community and business partners who support the program. The Clean & Green Vocational Training Program gives students a sense that they can handle anything put in front of them. Students are transformed as a result of this program.
