Running Start Basics Dual credit program for HS juniors and seniors Available fall, winter and spring quarters May take up to 15 college level credits per quarter Tuition paid through Running Start Students qualifying for fee waiver can take up to 20 credits 15 credits Full time class load 100 level courses and above 1 high school credit 5 college credits

How does a student qualify? Junior or senior in high school Must place into ENGL& 101 ENGL& 101 Placement All students are required to take the English Guided Self-Placement College Math placement To take college level math, student are required to take the Math Guided SelfPlacement.

Being a college student means Classes move at a faster pace Grades appear on permanent college and high school transcript Attendance is required to be successful Different holiday schedule Different atmosphere/maturity level Communication between college and family is restricted - FERPA Communication with high school staff is limited

Program Costs Program is not 100% free Every quarter students pay: Student Fees Example: 15 credits (full-time student) 200.00 (approx.) per quarter at Pierce College Course fees Books 300 for full-time students Supplies Provide own transportation Student Fee Waiver available to eligible students (waives student fees and excess credit tuition; automatically eligible for book loan program)

Time Management A full time course load at the college may only be 3 hours of class time per day (i.e. daily classes) Class study time that is expected at the college level for a week is twice the number of credits. 15 credits x 2 30 hours of study required per week Working? To be successful we highly recommend Students adjust work hours to meet schedules No more than 15 hours/week is advised Limit extracurricular activities as needed

Flexibility Classes can fill up quickly You may need to take an afternoon or evening class your first quarter. Students have the option to take classes at multiple campuses – Pierce College Fort Steilacoom, Puyallup, JBLM, Spanaway Lake HS, and Graham Kapowsin HS Remember that if you are not able to get into a class you need, you can try again the next quarter. (3 quarters per year) You may need to take certain courses at your high school as some courses have limited section(s) per quarter.

Important Dates – Pierce College Now: Complete admissions application for fall 2022 Late Feb – Early April: Complete Guided Self Placement for English & Math Need Student Identification Number (ctcLink ID) to Complete GSP Available online or in-person.

Important Dates – Pierce College Meet with your HS counselor: Counselors will share timeline Review high school completion requirements Complete and sign Enrollment Verification Form April through early September: Schedule an appointment with a success coach (college advisor) Registration for new students starts late May! September 19th - Fall quarter begins!
